TOP FIVE TIPS TO HELP GET YOU THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS THE HEALTHY WAY

– If you know you are going to have a big feast, don’t eat big meals leading up to it. If you are going out for dinner, have a light lunch and breakfast. If you are going out for a big lunch, have a low-calorie dinner to balance the day out. Remember it comes down to the OVERALL calories you consume over the course of the day.

– If you are going out for work drinks/end of year catch up’s with friends and you will be drinking alcohol, drink a glass of WATER to every alcoholic drink you have. Also aim to drink at least 2L of water during the day BEFORE hand. This will ensure you stay hydrated and will also help you sleep later on that evening resulting in waking up LESS tired and dehydrated. When you are tired and dehydrated your body actually craves unhealthy foods. Keep up the water intake as much as possible.

– Eat mindfully. Be aware of what is going into your mouth. Stop and really take in the moment. It is easy to not be fully present in the moment, and without even realizing it you have eaten 5 -6 fried spring rolls that have been circling, or before you know it you have consumed 3 – 4 mini burgers that the waiters keep bringing out. Really take the time to stop and enjoy the foods you do choose to eat. Eat them slowly and you will soon realize that you are not as hungry as you think. You will become fuller quicker. You also won’t “pig out” and all of a sudden feel a great sense of guilt or feel too full/bloated.

– Start the day with a work out of some sort. Get UP, get ACTIVE and get MOVING before your event and BURN CALORIES this is extremely important. Remember if you are eating MORE calories than what your body is accustomed to, and you fail to work out and burn them off unfortunately you WILL add unwanted body fat as you have now put yourself into a CALORIE SURPLUS.

– If you do slightly overeat DO NOT beat yourself up about it we are all human. Life is all about BALANCE and having FUN with your family and friends that is what this time of the year is all about. Simply train a little harder the next day and get back onto your plan when you can. The worst thing you can do is continually beat yourself up. Living a healthy LIFESTYLE does NOT need to get in the way of having fun with your loved ones. Get your workouts in, make positive food choices, drink lots of water and enjoy this time of the year!
